MOVIE REVIEW: RIO 2

April 18, 2014
We were recently invited to attend a screening to Rio 2. This sequel to the 2011 movie Rio takes the loveable Blue Macaws, Blu, Jewel and their three kids on an adventure in the wilds of the Amazon, where Linda and Tulio are also. Jewel reunites with her family, including her dad (Andy Garcia), and an old friend Roberto (Bruno Mars) who steals the movie with his dreamy voice, and bravado (and later comedic cowardice, followed by bravado again). Nigel, the vicious cockatoo we love to hate, returns, but with two new sidekicks, a mute aardvark and a shrill, love-besotted, and possibly-poisonous pink frog voiced by Kristin Chenoweth.

Rio 2 has an interesting mix of plots and jokes, some that appealed to kids and others to adults. There's a lot going on in this movie, and therefore some things are just skirted on. I personally liked the unplugging the kids are "forced" to do, and the quality family time the kids find when reuniting with their relatives, and I liked that kids in the audience are introduced to not only the need to protect the animals but the environment the animals live in.

Disclosure: I was invited to a complimentary screening of this movie, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
