A Quick Guide to Prepare Your Child for His First Preschool Experience

Once you and your child are ready for his first preschool experience, here are some guidelines to ensure his success in preschool. Some parents might think a child’s developing brain only absorbs valuable skills and information when they begin elementary school. However, it’s important to remember that the development of the human brain begins holistically at birth and through the first 5 years of life. If a child isn’t given the appropriate opportunity to learn literature, language, social / emotional and physical sills with an appropriate early childhood curriculum during this time in his life, there are chances he will have a difficult time maintaining the academic pace with his peers once he enters elementary school.

So, what exactly should parents focus on to provide the foundation for their child’s future success in school? And how can you ensure your child’s skills are developing effectively? The most important components to a child’s developmental foundation—apart from language and physical development—are cognitive thinking and social-emotional behavior.

Cognitive thinking abilities stimulate children through activities designed to create a
sense of cause and effect. In other words, repeated experiences encompassing a sense of order are helpful for children. Moreover, your child should learn how to employ his questioning strategies; for example, how and why? Question and answer activities will allow him to mature in basic reasoning and problem solving skills. As your child participates in solving simple problems, he becomes familiar with formulating decisions and discovering the ‘AHA’ moment.

On the other hand, social-emotional behavior stimulates your child in other ways. This area of development increases by placing your child in environments where he interacts with other children of similar age. By doing so, he is exposed to many forms of language. Reading and having two-way conversations with him are helpful for communication skills to increase.

For first time parents, this information my be overwhelming at first glance, but as your child grows, it becomes a natural part of loving, caring, and encouraging him to flourish into a healthy adult and contributing member of society.
