Recap (and Free Tix Offer): StinkyKids the Musical @AuroraTheatre

October 17, 2014
This past Saturday we were invited to a special, one-day-only public performance of StinkyKids the Musical at our favorite local theatre, Aurora Theatre. Don't fear though, it will soon be showing public performances at Synchronicity Theatre in Atlanta, and in the meantime there will be home-school and school-group performances at Aurora Theatre.

Actually, this coming Monday, October 20th, Aurora Theatre is offering FREE tickets to a home-school performance at either 11:30am or 1:00pm.
Get FREE tickets when you bring a bag of non-perishable food items to donate to the Holtkamp CAN Challenge benefiting Gwinnett food banks. Groups of 4 or more, also please call the Box Office at 678-226-6222 and/or register at http://ow.ly/CUZdn

StinkyKids the Musical is loosely based on the first book (of 3 books) written by a local and award-winning Atlanta mom, Britt Menzies. All 3 books were at Aurora Theatre that day for sale, as well as plushes of the different characters in the book/musical. After the show, we had the pleasure of meeting the author and having her sign our book. We also got to take a picture with her, and the cast of the musical.

StinkyKids the Musical appealed to both the adults and the kids in the audience, and seriously, the adults were laughing as loud and as often as the kids. The musical also contained catchy songs and fun dance moves that kept everyone engaged. I don't want to give away any spoilers but I will say it reminded me of "Alexander and the no good horrible day" movie... in that Britt, who never had that kind of day before, had the ultimate no good horrible day... but along the way, she learned a lot of valuable lessons about personal responsibility, family and friendship.

And if you're wondering, it doesn't have anything to do with Stinky (pee-you) kids. StinkyKids comes from the phrase ‘little stinkers’,  a term of endearment that represents innocent, mischievous behavior.

If you've never been to Aurora Theatre some things to note are they have general seating for kid performances, so arrive early (although there isn't a bad seat in the house - it's a very intimate venue). There is free parking at the attached parking garage and lot and they sell concessions that you can take with you to your seats.

StinkyKids the Musical Combines Laughs and Lessons at Aurora Theatre, October 8 – 24

Local Mom Turns Kid-Friendly Adventures into Educational Content for Theatre for Young Audiences

The perfect combination of entertainment and education, StinkyKids the Musical brings the humor of childlike innocence to Aurora Theatre, October 8-24, 2014. Based on the book series created by Atlanta mom Britt Menzies, the StinkyKids characters come alive from the page to the stage, where the “little stinkers” learn to make the right choices through childhood mistakes, all while attempting to follow the motto, “always be a good leader.” Co-produced with Synchronicity Theatre and co-directed by Jaclyn Hofmann and Justin Anderson, StinkyKids of all ages are invited to join the misadventures of Britt, Max, Skye, Jen, Johnny and Billy for this Theatre for Young Audiences performance.

“To engage today’s youth; the key is to incorporate a mix of entertainment and education. This helps children develop positive habits that actively teach the differences between right and wrong,” said Anthony Rodriguez, Producing Artistic Director. “Giving children exposure to these lessons early on, shape their thought processes for the future. Hopefully, we are teaching students the importance of being good citizens and community members.”

When Britt ignores her parents’ request to not fall asleep with gum in her mouth, she wakes up in the stickiest of situations, literally. Much to her dismay, an epic wad of gum is stuck in her hair! With plans to visit Captain Happy’s Jumpy-Fun-Super-Bouncy Indoor Place, her faithful friends come to the rescue. Will it be before her parents find out? Faced with simple decisions of right or wrong, Britt and friends discover the perils of childhood, all while having fun together.

In addition to the performance, school groups will enjoy a pre- and post-show discussion, as well as access to an extensive study guide, reinforcing the educational content viewed during the show. StinkyKids the Musicalcontains multiple direct connections to Common Core Georgia Performance Standards, vital for student achievement and directly related to the state’s core curriculum. As a bonus, Menzies will be present at each performance, available for questions and discussions!
