Over thanksgiving break, we packed the trunk of a Mazda 3 and took a road trip 6 hours away to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for a short stay at the Crown Reef Resort. While there we visited many local attractions, including MagiQuest, which provided us with complimentary admission.
MagiQuest is an interactive live-action, role playing game where players embark on quests and adventures in an enchanted fantasy world using real magic wands to solve the mysteries of the game. Your wand is how you play and control your game. It knows your character (you get to choose your own magical name) and remembers your achievements. Each visit to the MagiQuest kingdom will allow you to progress further and master the skills needed to solve the mysteries of the game. Once your adventure concludes, your wand will come home with you. No need to experience everything in one day - as if you could. You can play at any of the 16 locations throughout North America, including at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and at Great Wolf locations!

MacGirl is really into Harry Potter and wizardry now, partly because of our recent visit to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Florida. Although I didn't quite understand what MagiQuest was, I knew I wanted to take her. When we arrived, the first thing we noticed was the line of kids waiting for the doors to open! It's highly popular! I was thankful that we had this chance in the offseason to visit, as I can only imagine how long the line and wait is during the summer or how crowded it is inside the attraction.

Because we were new to the experience we were taken into a "training class" that lasted a few minutes. Our instructor taught us how to use our wands, and how to decipher clues and earn the achievements. You get to choose your own wand, and there are several choices that vary in color, size, and price. There are also toppers and other decorative things you can add to your wand to personalize it at an additional fee. As noted above, you get to keep the wand forever, and it stores your info and achievements so when you return you don't have to start back from square one. As well as you can use your wand at another MagiQuest but it's a "different" world so the achievements you earn at Myrtle Beach won't apply at another location.
You also choose how much time you will play for, which typically is 1.5-2 hours. We were there for 1.5 hours and completed 3 Quests.. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but there are A LOT of quests, so don't think you could ever finish in one day - heck you may not even finish in one month if you went every day.
Adults have to pay admission even if they are not playing, but it's only $5. If you're playing, the price varies depending on what package you choose. Several parents dropped off their preteens and teens and picked them up when the time was up.
It's a fun experience but you do have to be in the mindset. I'd describe it as an electronic scavenger hunt in a live videogame, so you have to abandon reality for the hour and a half or two hours that your are in there. You have to use your wit and skills. MacGirl and I played till our time ran out, but R got a little frustrated and abandoned it after an hour. MacGirl's ready to go back as soon as we say the word.
If you plan to go to the Myrtle Beach location, I've heard there are coupons as well as groupons, so do your research. The Crown Reef Resort, where we were staying, did have discounted tickets to many of the local attractions but they did not have discounted tickets for this attraction. It is pricey, especially if it's your first time as you're buying the wand too, but it's a unique experience and you're on vacation so I would recommend splurging on it especially if your kids are into fantasy, sci-fi, and magic.
