Netherworld Haunted House has been a staple in the Atlanta Halloween scene since 1997 but this is there first year in their new location in Stone Mountain. My husband and I tell each other each year that we have to go but with all the required kid activities in the fall season it always seems to fall to the side and get forgotten but this year we finally made it! After reading on the website that Google maps can be a tad wonky we decided to do a quick drive by before dinner just to make sure we knew where we were going before it got dark and to decide where to park, there is parking lots behind Netherworld itself and across the street at the storage center, we successfully found our destination and were beyond amazed to see that although they weren’t opening for another thirty minutes there were already people buying tickets and waiting in line for the doors to open. Definitely get here early, or buy the speed pass, if you don’t like a huge line.
After a quick dinner break we were back and parked across the street at the storage center, it was super easy to find the way thanks to the parking attendees posted around guiding traffic. We were greeted and given our speed passes and we were off to be scared. The first Haunted house “The Awakened” is unlike anything I have ever experienced, there are so many large-scale animatronics it looks more like a Hollywood horror movie then a local haunted house. Every live actor in the haunt has that same Hollywood movie caliber make up, costuming, and acting. I was so incredibly impressed at their ability to frighten me even after I had seen them frighten the people in front of us. It was nearly impossible to tell the difference between the props and the actors until one of them started running toward you. If I wasn’t trying to run away from the actors I could’ve spent a lifetime inspecting all the detail put into every nook and cranny of this haunt, which is impressive due to the sheer massive size of it. Everything from the texture of the ground to the timing of the props that pop out of the walls is just perfect inside this haunt. After guessing wrong six or seven times about the haunt coming to an end I was at last correct, we were lunged at one final time by a weapon wielding maniac and then a few steps later we were in the middle of the midway.
A long outdoor area that has a covered area with a few benches, two stands selling food (hot dogs, nachos, cokes, waters, donuts), two game stands, three or four areas to take pictures, and the walk way to the second haunt “Subject: Unknown”. We decided to play the two games before doing the second haunt to give our hearts a break and had a blast interacting with the actors in charge of both. We headed over to “Subject: Unknown” flashed our speed passes and walked in front of the very long line, seriously these things are great, and started to make our way through the haunt. This haunt was themed more like a human experiment gone wrong with the experiments running wild throughout the haunt. It was extremely terrifying to be at ground zero trying to make our way through the maze horrors thankfully a friendly actor would appear to guide us in the right direction. Even though this haunt is shorter than the first I think personally I enjoyed it more, it was darker and creepier, and more out of the ordinary. Don’t get me wrong I loved both and we will be back for more but “Subject: Unknown” was definitely the winning moment of the night for me. After we finished the haunt we headed back to the midway for some water and donuts (so yummy!) and to watch the two clowns patrolling around pester the guests that are more on the side of terrified. Over all we had a fantastic night. It was one of the best date nights we have had in the past couple years and we will be making another trip before the close of the season.
