Fernbank Museum of Natural History Brings Science to Life

By Rachel Horlacher August 29, 2019

The week before school started back here in Gwinnett, we decided to play tourists in our own town and explore a little bit of Atlanta. Of course when we think of kid-friendly venues, Fernbank Museum of Natural History was top of our list. I love how they are always having rotating exhibits that you can learn about something new almost every time you come to Fernbank.

We started our tour with the A Walk Through Time in  Georgia where we saw the different regions that make up Georgia with it’s respective landscape and animals It was a great teaching opportunity for my 9-year old since she just learned about Georgia geography the previous year in school. My kids favorite part of this section was the fossils at the end of the dinosaurs who used to roam the area we live now.

Our next stop was the rotating exhibit, which happened to be Monster Fish. It talked about the monster fish who live throughout the world and are hunted to near extinction. The kids loved the interactive fishing station where the kids could try to fish for the monster fish.

At the end of this exhibit, we went up to the third floor to the Nature Quest exhibit. It is an interactive playground where they have educational and interactive elements for the kids to be able to play in nature.

After Nature Quest, we went to Fantastic Forces and wished we had not waited until the last half and hour before it closed to work our way into the room. My kids especially loved the wind tunnel, making your own airplanes to see which ones were the most aerodynamic, and where you can make your own tornado all with the power of wind.

Overall, plan to spend around 2 to 3 hours here plus however much time you want to spend outside in their outdoor exhibit, which since it is summer and I REALLY don’t like going outside when it’s in the 90’’s, we skipped it this trip.
